The Power of Community Spirit!
Feel proud Staveley... You are Awesome! Massive thanks to everyone who came, the atmosphere was infectious!
Community Growth CIC, Staveley Town Council and The Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership are still celebrating, following the success of their first joint Christmas event - Staveley On Ice 2016.
Following the recent launch of the Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership, Community Growth wanted to bring an affordable, high impact and high quality cultural experience to Staveley.
Once we had the idea of the Ice Rink, we just needed a date and a location. Staveley Town Council were in the middle of organising their Christmas Market and Lights Switch On. A lot of work had already gone in to their Christmas Event, so we suggested holding Staveley On Ice on the same day. That way, the attractions would enhance each other and it was hoped that the Ice Rink would increase the footfall to the market and benefit the surrounding local businesses.
But with the date of the market looming, could the Partnership really pull this off in just 3 weeks? Despite being in its infancy the network set to work, donating, sponsoring and promoting the event. Very quickly this became bigger than the partnership. It became a magnificent community effort. News of the event spread through social media and an incredible 30 members of our community, including 8 young people, collectively volunteered a massive 366 hours of their time, both on the lead up to and on the day of the event.
At short notice, the schools quickly booked up the avaliable time slots for their students and brought them along on public transport. Barrow Hill Primary Academy even walked along the canal to get there! This resulted in 186 school students skating on the day, with many enjoying the experience for the first time.
Feedback on the night and since, has been incredible! With over 2000 people attending the event, not only did the Ice Rink prove a massive success, but the knock on affect on local businesses was a wonderful addition to proceedings, It was truly heartwarming to see everywhere so busy. The Fish and Chip Shop did its best nights trade ever since opening. The Pantry Cafe stayed open until the end of the event, kindly fueling our volunteers with free hot drinks throughout the day and evening. The market itself did a fantastic trade on the night, including our Green Barrows Team, who took over £172 on their Tombola and Crafts stall. The Market Square was unrecognisable and the atmosphere was truly wonderful! For anyone worried that community spirit in Staveley is lost, hopefully, after this event, feels that it is still very much alive and well.
"I havent seen the square look like this for over 30 years! If I hadnt seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed it!" (Local Business Owner)
Huge congratulations to Staveley Town Council for the wonderful Christmas Lights, market stalls, and children's fair rides. Everything looked fantastic. The school choirs were magical. Well done Hollingwood Primary School, Staveley Junior School and Norbriggs Primary School!
Everyone who took part in the event should feel enormously proud of what we have collectively achieved, in just 3 short weeks. But from the perspective of Community Growth CIC we wish to thank the following people, who played a major part in the success of this not for profit experience.
To Eliot Booth, who went above and beyond; raising funds, organising the Sponsorship Banners, marketing and paperwork, as well as creating a wonderful atmosphere with his Christmas Music on the day. Also, to Andy Jakins, who took the lead on the Health & Safety of the Rink and stayed all day to make sure everything ran smoothly.
To our Community Growth Volunteer Team, Chris & Dick Peace, Jackie & Tom Booth, Wendy Smith, Matt & Louise Smith, Lou Jenkins, Sam Cox, Lisa Sambrooks, Holly Swain, Maxine Cooke, Jiminy Anderson, Jamie Miles, Martin Gibson, Mick Nicholls & Rob. It is down to you guys that 'Staveley on Ice' ran smoothly and safely. You're all awesome!
To our Youth Revolution Team, Adam, Connor, John, Ben, Aiden, Ian, Cody, Bethany & Stanley. You guys were fantastic! The way you conducted yourselves, got your sleeves rolled up and got stuck in, made us extremely proud. Your enthusiasm and commitment, continue to inspire us!
To The Green Barrows, for creating a wonderful stall and raising funds for their work with Community Growth CIC.
An extra shout out to Diane who bravely promoted the event live on Peak FM!
To all the local businesses that stayed open and added to the amazing atmosphere in the square that night. The Pantry, The Fish & Chip Shop, Hair with Attitude, Wisebuys & The Factory Shop.
A special mention also to Morrisons, Job Lot, Robinsons Caravans, All Inn & Harleys Bar for helping to promote the event.
A massive thanks also to; Ronald, Daniel & Yarik, The George Irvin Team who supplied, erected and ran the rink. You guys were fantastic!
We were able to offer the Ice Rink experience at 50% of its usual cost. A massive thank you is due to Staveley Town Council who contributed a third of the overall funding needed, and adapted their plans to make this happen.
Further funding was generously donated by Derbyshire County Council and Fitzwise, along with local residents; Rockie White, Dave Marsh and Eunice Williamson.
We also saw a new form of cultural investment in the community, by our wonderful local businesses and partners, who each sponsored a banner to help raise the remaining funds needed. Please see below to see all the generous supportors of this venture.
Together, you have helped us realise an affordable activity for all the community... hopefully, following the huge success of this event, this will become a regular part of the festivities in Staveley. Staveley on Ice 2017 anyone?
We are currently working on an Evaluation Report and this will be avaliable on our website once complete, so keep checking back.
